Since I have been gluten free for two years, I have looked through countless gluten free blogs. Below are a couple blogs I have reviewed in hopes to gain insight as to how I can better my own blog.
Minimalist Baker:
- Gluten free and vegan recipes.
- Blog has so much personality from the owners, John and Dana.
- Their store features cookbooks and how-to guides for food photography.
- Section devoted to helping new food bloggers get going.
Minimalist Baker is a great place for gluten free and vegan eaters to visit because Dana is constantly putting out new recipes. For picky eaters, it is so nice to be able to visit her "sweets" section of recipes and be able to find something satisfying and easy to make. She also does a great job of keeping the variety consistent. Currently, their home page features breakfast potatoes, cupcakes and gin and tonics. There's seriously one of everything.
However, There is often a problem with the set up of their page. The pictures don't always fit or are fuzzy (due to technical issues) and sometimes links don't click. Minor errors, but something I believe could be easily fixed that would make the site look much better. I do want to compliment on the simplicity and ease of use of their site. That's a huge plus to me!
The blog is present on popular social media sites and all accounts are very active, but the response from their audience is lacking. Since they spend so much time putting content on their social media, it would be smart for them to think of some way to engage with followers instead of just posting the newest recipe.
Gluten Free Goddess:
- Loads of organized recipes.
- Tips and information on gluten free lifestyles.
- Tips on how to cook and bake gluten free (it's really complicated).
- FAQ on eating gluten free.
- Site looks crowded but is easy to navigate.
Like most gluten free blogs, Gluten Free Goddess, Karina Allrich, is loaded with yummy recipes. They are organized into breads, meals, desserts, drinks, and in each of those categories are subcategories and the list goes on. I really love her FAQ section. It is super super helpful even to those that have been gluten free for awhile.
The site looks a bit outdated and there are ads on both sides, as well as more links to her own site. Everything is everywhere all the time. It is hard to differentiate between ads and her own information and the crowdedness just gives me anxiety. Again, she has a ton of great information and such a great variety of recipes but she seems to sort of throw it in the viewers face non-stop.
She is on the top social media sites, but facebook seems to be her forte. She posts recipes to twitter and facebook, but her facebook fans share and like her posts much more than her twitter followers do. She also features a comments sections on her blog, but it leads you to another site to have "conversations". It's confusing and too much to mess with, if you ask me.
I am so excited to start my own gluten free blog! Gluten free has a reputation of being sad and boring, but it's not. I'm not a mom slaving away to make a dinner my gluten free kids can and will eat. Inventing fabulous new recipes and laughing at the disasters is fun to me and I think it will make for a happy blog!
